A Mexican flag football team turned a journey marked by loss into a remarkable achievement, winning four championships at the 2026 Ningbo Flag Football Open in China.

The 78-member delegation claimed titles across four divisions, establishing itself as one of the event's most successful teams in Ningbo's Zhenhai district.

Their participation came just weeks after the sudden passing of head coach Julio Cesar Ocana, a pioneering figure in Mexican flag football who died of a heart attack shortly before the team's departure. Despite the tragedy, the team chose to travel to China and compete.

According to team leadership, the players carried his influence with them throughout the tournament, using the competition as a way to honor his legacy and coaching philosophy.

Team officials said the athletes demonstrated exceptional commitment on the field, describing their performance as a reflection of the standards instilled by their coach.

Beyond the competition, the team highlighted the warm welcome they received in Ningbo, praising the hospitality, local culture, and overall organization of the event. Several members said the experience left a lasting impression and strengthened their desire to return in the future.

For the delegation, the trip became more than just a sporting appearance abroad. It combined competition, remembrance, and cultural exchange, culminating in a rare achievement of four championship titles.

The team said it plans to return to Ningbo next year.
