Hangzhou has opened its first national-level youth drone soccer training base in Shangcheng district to promote emerging tech sports among young people.
The facility, which launched on July 15, spans about 400 square meters and combines education, training, and competition. It is also the first venue in the city with national-level qualifications to host youth drone soccer events.
Drone soccer originated in South Korea in 2014 and was introduced to China in 2019. The game requires players to control drones via radio signals in three-minute matches, with two teams of three drones — one attacking and two defending — competing to fly their drones through the opponent's goal. The drones, enclosed in carbon fiber shields, can reach speeds of 200 to 300 kilometers per hour.
The venue is fitted with international-standard features such as high-quality nylon protective nets and LED goalposts with sensors for accurate scoring. It also offers experience courses and camps aimed at nurturing talent for provincial and national teams.
Local sports officials said Hangzhou introduced drone soccer in 2021 and plans to launch an elite training class next year. The long-term goal is to develop Zhejiang athletes capable of competing at national and international levels.
